About Joe – Founder

Hey there Papa Bear

Welcome, and thanks for stopping by!

I’m Joe the father of this website and experience that is Trust Your Old Man. My goal is to help you be the best possible dad you can be. Hopefully, this leads to your child(ren) being their best version, before growing up and becoming great parents themselves – a wonderful never-ending cycle of great parents and people!

My beginnings…

I’ll start by saying that my mum did a fantastic job raising me, there were some bumps along the road but aside from a cookie addiction, I think I’ve turned out normal(ish) – though my wife, family and friends may beg to differ…

See, I was lucky. With an absent father, my mum worked incredibly hard in every aspect to give me the best possible chance in life, but not every child lucks out like I did and since becoming a father myself (Jack, age 2 n a half, food of choice chocolate cake, favourite dinosaur Stegosauraus Rex) I’ve learned to appreciate how important it is to have a caring and loving parent(s) that nurtures your development.

“It doesn’t come with an instruction manual”

As all new parents quickly discover, children do not come with a how-to guide and in this digital age, there are more pitfalls than ever. While our own parents can still offer up advice, the world landscape has changed so radically that they don’t always exactly have their finger on the pulse (sorry Mum).

  • How much should they eat?
  • When should I discipline them and am I wrong to say ‘No’?
  • How should I discipline them!?
  • What are some good educational toys?
  • Is there a best type of car seat for a 4-year-old?

These are just a drop in the ocean in the never ending list of questions that you face as a father but there is help…

How can this site help?

Well, the goal of this website is to provide as many useful tools, tips and tricks to help you navigate this crazy ride that we call fatherhood through a combination of data and science-backed information, as well as drawing on real-life experience, including my trials and tribulations with Jack.

Of course, there is no perfect way to parent but I will give you tactics, strategies and actionable information that you can use, to help you make the right decisions for your own scenario. Additionally, in our modern world there is a wealth of products and technology available to assist us, so this site will provide guidance on the must-have’s and those to avoid.

Finally, every Dad (and child) is different, so some things will work for you, while others won’t. The key is to test and monitor what helps you and your situation. Keep what works, and throw away what doesn’t!

If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

All the best,

Joe Chaplin
